Bhubaneswar Roundtable Explores Role of Youth Education in Building Peace

The Public Affairs Committee of the Local Spiritual Assembly of Bhubaneswar convened a roundtable event on 25 September 2025 at the Bahá’í House Convention Hall, Bhubaneswar, on the theme “Thoughts of Peace in Youth Education.” The gathering created a space for shared reflection on how peace can be cultivated through education, particularly among young people who stand at the forefront of shaping society’s future. The event brought together a diverse group of nearly 50 participants, including professors, social workers, faith leaders, educators, civil society representatives, students, and government officials. Among them was the Chief Guest, Dr. Subhasree Nanda (IAS), Additional Secretary, School and Mass Education Department, Government of Odisha, who emphasized the importance of embedding peace into educational structures.

The discussions highlighted that peace is not merely the absence of conflict but a condition that demands justice, equity, and cooperation—values that must be nurtured within classrooms, communities, and families. Speakers reflected on the urgent need to move beyond treating young people as passive learners, and instead to recognize them as active protagonists capable of advancing social harmony. From a spiritual and ethical standpoint, participants underscored that education must encompass both the material and moral dimensions of life, preparing individuals to transcend prejudice, embrace inclusivity, and contribute meaningfully to reconciliation efforts.

Participants observed that when education fails to cultivate peace, entire communities are weakened, but when values of unity and justice are fostered among youth, societies gain resilience and hope. The event concluded with a shared commitment to integrate peace education into universities, schools, and community initiatives, and to encourage youth-led endeavors that promote dialogue and mutual understanding. Attendees expressed appreciation for the Bahá’í community’s efforts in convening such a gathering and affirmed their resolve to translate the insights gained into practical action across Odisha and beyond.
